Horrror Challenage

Horror Film final evaluation:

Pre production:

  • During pre production, I think things went well. We didnt have any arguments when we were trying to come up with the idea, this allowed things to run more smoothly. I think that arguments during the preparation of our short film would have made things more difficult. I think that we all understood how to complete all of the pre-prodction paperwork from the year one workshpt where we learnt how do do them. This made things a lot easier as we were able to get them out the way. When we were introduced to this project I think that it took a while it come up with a clear idea. However, I think It took us a while to get a clear idea on what we wanted our film to look like. I also feel like we rushed our pre production because I dont think our whole group understood the idea and how we were going to execute it. Apart from all of this, I think that our idea fit the supernatural horror theme. As a group I think we did really well with the props we chose to use. We even tea stained and damaged a few diaries to make them look old and fit the scene. We had things such as a typewriter, fake candles, a brief case and newspapers to make the desk scenes fit the theme we were going for.

  • Eventhough I think that things ran smoothly I also think our group discussions were a mess. Not everyone was in the same room at one time due to people having to leave early and people turning up late. This made things difficult and was one of the reasons our preparation and production took so long. Not everyone turned up on time including the actor which made things harder as there was alot of waiting around.

  • As a group we decided that it would be easier if we used ourselves as the actors instead of hiring or looking for someone else. We also thought that it would be easier to use a location nearby as there a lot of us in a group and it would be difficult to wait around for everyone to show up on time.

Production:

  • I think that we were able to capture a big variation of shots and angles. We were able to get a few manual shots that were infocus. As I was the one incharge of the camera I was happy that I didnt forget anything that I had learnt from the workshops from the first year of college. I think I was able to get good angels that worked well in the edit that I made. As a group I think there were points were we worked well as a group however, there were points were it was difficult to work together as there were not alot of times where everyone from our group were in the same room. However, during the times where everyone was in I think we worked well as a group because we all took different jobs and the filming ran smoothly. We made sure to take a picture of the set after the first day of filming as we needed to pay attention to detail   in case we needed to go back to scenes.

  • I think that not being able to work in a group alot of the time caused up to have a few set backs. This was caused by people having to leave early due to work or just turning up late. This made things difficult especially when it came to filming. We needed people on lighting and to see if we all liked how the shots looked before we moved on. We were unable to film one of our actors as she had to leave early which was around the time when people started to turn up. This was another set back because these scenes were important to the story. However, she was able to record from home which was useful. Eventhough these shots werent in the best quality as they would be if we had a camera, they were the only option we had and I think that they still worked with the edit.

  • Near the end of our production process we received a tripod that wasnt very stable and caused some of the shots to come out shaky, however this was fixed with post production when I put the stabaliser effect on it. We had a different idea for our locations we wanted to use, however we were unable to use these because by the time we started filming it was rush our and it was very busy.

  • During production there were some problems that we came across. For example, Our actor had forgotten to bring in the dress shoes we needed for a walking shot we had planned to film. The only problem was that we couldnt get a close up of the shoes.

Post production:

  • Because of the way we filmed all of our footage, it was easy to start the edit as we had filmed everything in order. I managed to remember all of the basics when editing my short film. I even researched some more in order to improve the edit and make it more interesting. Eventhough all of our edits are separate we al helped and shared ideas in order to improve eachothers edits.

  • Eventhough I used alot of techniques there were some clips that I had to crop due to the actor not having the dress shoes we needed. This was a problem because we couldnt get a close up of the shoes. This also made some of the clips look as if they were shot at weird angles, however I had no other option.

  • With the clips we filmed in the green screen room, I also had to crop them because either the green screen or someone was in shot. This wasn’t as much of a big problem as cropping the scenes just made the shot look like a close up.

  • The crop on this shot looks a little weird however I think it also adds to the atmosphere of the scene. This is one of the clips in my short film that I do not like and this is due to the cropping. However, all of the other shots have the same issue.

  • I prefer the shot cropped because it seems more intimate and looks more like an over shoulder shot. I also changed the colouring of the scene so it doesnt look so red. This is because we used alot of red in this scene, when we wanted the redness in scenes to grow as more blood is shown throughout the film.

  • I liked these shots becuse the manual focus worked. I wanted the background to be blurred so that the audience can focus on the main events of the scene. For example, the main character picking up the notebook is one of the most important events of the whole story. It is how everything begins. Also noticing the blood on his hand is important because its the first event that changes his life.

  • This shot was filmed by mistake. Its just a clip of ethan zoning out but I still used it ikn my edit. I used it because it gave me the opportunity to include some of the flashbacks of events that the character has been through. It helps with the narrative of the story.

  • For this shot I put the dream effect on it to make it look more like the main character dreaming. I think it adds to the edit. I prefer it to the original shot as it looks as if it happened ages ago because of the lighting. However, I also think that it has ruined the quality of the shot.
